Uses : Norethisterone is a man-made form of progesterone, a naturally occurring female heath hormone. It has a number of uses :
- Low-strength progesterone is used in oral contraceptive pill to prevent pregnancy.
- Medium-strength progesterone is used, to treat irregular, painful or heavy periods, to treat endometriosis (where tissue from the lining of the womb is present in places where it is not normally found), to treat premenstrual syndrome (also known as premenstrual tension, PMS or PMT), to delay periods.
- High-strength tablets are sometimes used in some female cancers such as breast cancer.
How it works : Norethisterone works by altering the lining of the uterus. The low-dose contraceptive changes the lining of the womb and so prevents esent in the body) on womb lining, stabilizes this lining and decreases pain and bleeding during the periods or delays the periods. Continuous exposure to norethisterone decreases the rate of growth of breast cancer cells.
Dosage : To be taken by female patients. Always follow the instructions of doctor regarding the dosage and duration :
- Oral contraceptive pill - 350 mcg tablet.
- Pre-menstrual symptoms - 5 mg, two or three tablets a day from the 19th to the 26th day of your menstrual cycle (counting the first day of your period as day one).
- To treat abnormal, heavy or continuous bleeding during periods: 5 mg tablet, three times daily for ten days.
- To prevent abnormal, heavy or continuous bleeding during periods OR treat prolonged or heavy periods - 5 mg tablet twice daily from the 19th to the 26th day of your menstrual cycle (counting the first day of your period as day one).
Common side effects : Bleeding and spotting between your periods, headache, feeling dizzy, urge to vomit, vomiting, no menstrual periods, painful breasts, feeling tired, weight gain, depression; feeling nervous, stomach pain and other stomach problems, acne, rash, hair thinning , excessive hair growth, pain in legs, painful periods with heavy bleeding, vaginal discharge, ovarian cyst, Hypersensitivity (allergic reaction).
